03:03: zidane, you broke my heart.
why, oh why, oh why did you do that? why, on that game, of all games? why, when there was so much at stake? why, when you were 10 minutes away from going into penalties? why, when you know that there was a 95% chance that you would have scored in penalties? and most importantly, why, when you knew it would have been the last move you would ever do on the pitch?
the frickin' world cup finals! the last game of your career!! whyyyyyyyyy???
whether or not france would have won, i was content in knowing that the french drew first blood with zidane's penalty kick. personally, i think that italy needed the win more than the french did, what with all this crap going on and the possible relegations from the serie a. i didn't even mind that trezeguet missed his penalty. i still think he's a good player and was under-used in this world cup. but for my hero to give a solid headbutt like that from out of nowhere... to be sent-off for a nasty headbutt on the last game of your career... *sigh* the public will never forget that. he will be remembered for it the same way maradonna is remembered for his "hand of god" and his drug scandal.
he won the golden ball, though. to me, the headbutt changes little. did his actions merit a red card? yes. i was absolutely appalled and completely dumbfounded by what he did. does that make him any less better as a player? no, it doesn't. some think that he retaliated because he was called a terrorist.
now, really.
on principle, there is absolutely no excuse for headbutting anyone, no matter what they say to you. but personally, calling an algerian a terrorist is really low, and if i were zidane, i'd have slugged the bastard, too.
